Fukuoka Prefecture Approves Supplementary Budget for Seismic Research and Tourism Initiatives

On September 25, the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly approved a supplementary budget of over ¥10.5 billion for the current fiscal year, which includes funding for preliminary research on seismic and tsunami risks associated with active faults in nearby marine areas. This decision follows concerns raised by the Noto Peninsula earthquake.

The budget allocates approximately ¥26.74 million for preliminary surveys to assess the need for further research on the potential impact of earthquakes and tsunamis triggered by these faults. Additionally, ¥153.34 million has been earmarked for tourism development in collaboration with international travel agencies. This includes the creation of the “Yoka Bus” tour, which will offer bus tours around Fukuoka Prefecture, as well as the development of travel packages combining bullet train tickets and accommodations. These initiatives aim to attract international visitors to Fukuoka during the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

For the first time, the budget also explicitly includes about ¥20.73 million for overseas study trips for prefectural assembly members. This move follows recommendations by a project team within the assembly, established in June, to increase transparency regarding the overseas trips.
