Fukuoka Region Grows as Rest of Prefecture Declines

Fukuoka Prefecture’s total population stood at 5,097,710 as of October 1, 2024, marking a year-on-year decline of 9,202. However, the Fukuoka metropolitan area, centered on Fukuoka City, saw an increase of 13,310 people due to net in-migration, underscoring a growing population concentration in the region. In contrast, other regions in the prefecture saw declines: Kitakyushu dropped by 10,990 to 1,213,790; Chikugo fell by 6,639 to 769,432; and Chikuho decreased by 4,883 to 378,985. The Fukuoka area now makes up 53.7% of the prefecture’s population. Within the region, Chikuzen Town recorded the highest growth rate at 1.2%, followed by Fukuoka City (0.86%) and Fukutsu City (0.70%). Meanwhile, demographic shifts continue as the elderly population increased by 2,550, while the working-age and youth populations declined by 558 and 11,011, respectively, indicating ongoing aging and depopulation trends.
