Fukuoka Reviews Lecture Payments

Fukuoka Prefecture said it paid lecture honorariums above official standards in 26 “One Health” related events held since fiscal 2023. According to the prefecture, inaccurate preparation times were added to payment calculations, resulting in about JPY1.29 million being paid to 14 lecturers despite a guideline limiting fees to JPY6,000 per hour. One 2024 lecture by prefectural assembly speaker Isao Kurauchi reportedly received JPY100,000 for an event lasting about one hour after preparation hours were overstated. Officials acknowledged the process was inappropriate and said payment amounts had been adjusted to match market expectations without properly confirming preparation times. The prefecture plans to investigate whether similar cases occurred in other departments. Source: KBC News / TNC News
