One month after a large sinkhole appeared on Kokutai Road in central Fukuoka, city officials have confirmed that soil entered an underground storm drain during construction, leading to the collapse. On June 10, a 4-meter-deep and 2-meter-wide hole formed unexpectedly, prompting a full closure of the four-lane road and overnight repair work. The city explained that in April, during work to connect two storm drains, excavation machinery became stuck underground. An attempt to extract the machine created a gap between the two pipes, allowing soil to enter and compromise the road above. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause and circumstances with the contractor involved. Source: TNC
