Fukuoka Starts Survey Ahead of Castle Excavation

Fukuoka City has launched drone-based surveying of the Honmaru and Tenshudai areas at Fukuoka Castle, ahead of its first academic excavation to determine whether a castle tower (tenshukaku) once existed. The survey, which will span approximately two months, uses drone photography and laser scanning to create detailed 3D maps. Excavation will begin between June and July, focusing on the interior of the castle tower base, with restricted public access during the estimated six-month investigation. Additional studies will assess whether the foundation could have supported a tower, including ground strength and borehole testing. The project is expected to conclude within this fiscal year.
