Fukuoka Unveils New Subway Cars After 27 Years!

The Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau has announced new “4000 Series” subway cars for the Airport and Hakozaki Lines, to start operating in fall 2024. This update, the first in 27 years since 1997, involves an investment of around 21 billion yen for 18 train sets by 2027. Designed for comfort, these cars feature ‘free spaces’ for luggage, catering to citizens and tourists accessing Fukuoka Airport. Special attention is given to those with strollers, wheelchairs, or large luggage, with car number six dedicated to this purpose and equipped with small seats for assistance.

These cars will use high-efficiency motors, cutting electricity use by 20% compared to current models, and will have four security cameras for real-time monitoring, a first in a domestic subway. The introduction of these cars will replace the “1000N Series” vehicles, in service since the subway’s inauguration in 1981, and are expected to last for 40 to 50 years.
