Fukuoka Youth Unaware of Bombing

According to a survey by the Nishinippon Shimbun Metro Desk, 48 out of 50 local youth said they did not know that Fukuoka was bombed in World War II. The Bombing of Fukuoka took place on June 19th, 1945 and burned down large parts of Daimyo and Hakata. Twenty-five males and 25 females aged 15 to 25 were asked “Do you know the significance of June 19th in Fukuoka?” Despite this being the time of year that elementary schools cover the bombing in peace studies classes, only two respondents replied affirmatively. The two respondents said they remembered learning about the bombing in elementary school, but others admitted that they “slept through peace studies class” or that they only “remember studying about Hiroshima and Nagasaki”. These results reveal the importance of passing on stories from the past. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun. June 12
