Fukuoka Zoo has announced the passing of Nene, a 21-year-old female lion who had been a resident for over 18 years. Nene died on July 9th, leaving the zoo with only one remaining lion, an 11-year-old male named Chachamaru. In honor of Nene, a flower tribute stand will be set up at the lion enclosure from July 10th to 15th. Visitors can leave letters and flowers as offerings.
Nene was born on May 6, 2003, and arrived at Fukuoka Zoo on June 12, 2006. Her health began to decline sharply in early June, showing a significant loss of appetite and weakening condition. She was removed from public display on June 25th and moved to the zoo’s back area for rest. Her condition worsened on July 7th, and she was found deceased in her sleeping quarters on the morning of July 9th. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
Lions typically measure between 1.4 to 2.5 meters in length, weigh between 120 to 250 kilograms, and have an average lifespan of approximately 20 years. They are native to Africa and are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and are included in CITES Appendix II. Source: Fukuoka Zoo
