Fukuoka’s Fantastic Fukubukuro

Details of some 2013 fukubukuro special deals in Fukuoka have been released! Fukubukuro (福袋 lucky bag / mystery bag) is a Japanese New Year’s Day custom where merchants make grab bags filled with unknown random contents and sell them for a substantial discount. But every year, big retailers also release fukubukuro deals that don’t fit inside a bag!

Hakata Hankyu’s 2013 fukubukuro is unique – they are selling 30 seconds worth of advertising space on the big screen in Hakata City to be used for a romantic person’s wedding proposal! The proposal film will be shown on the evening of 1/13 for 30 seconds, accompanied by an illumination. This fukubukuro package costs ¥5,989 (limited to 1) and includes dinner for the couple.

Another notable fukubukuro comes from Izutsuya (Kitakyushu), who are selling locker room tours of J2 soccer team “Giravanz Kitakyushu”. Get inside the professional team’s locker room and meet the players for ¥13,000 (inc. souvenir uniform) or ¥5,250 (no souvenir uniform). Limited to 11.

Iwataya Mitsukoshi are selling customizable fukubukuro – for ¥10,500, customers can choose one item from each section: homewares, clothing and utensils – to add to their bag. Conditions apply.

Finally, Yamagataya (Kagoshima) is selling houses for ¥21,300,000 each (limited to 3). The 2-storey houses have a total floor space of 122 ㎡, and include optional solar panels worth 1 million yen. But don’t get too excited – the price does not include land! Which fukubukuro will you go for in 2013?
