Futaba Invites Bombing Eyewitnesses To Peace Studies Class

On June 9, Futaba Elementary School, which is now temporarily housed in the old Daimyo Elementary School building, invited three Daimyo grads who lived through the bombing of Fukuoka in World War II to speak about their experiences in a peace studies class for fifth and sixth graders. Lifetime Daimyo resident Hiroo Sata (age: 84) talked about his experience on a bucket brigade. “Buckets of water evaporated immediately,” he recalled. Yusuke Kumamoto (age: 78) said he remembers seeing dead bodies all over the city once the fires subsided two days after the bombing. Eighty-six year old Teruko Ito was running down a narrow path when a bomb struck nearby. “I would’ve died if an older girl hadn’t thrown sand on me to put out the flames.” Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the bombing on June 19, Futaba organized the class so that students could learn about the tragic event, which struck Daimyo particularly hard, before moving back to the new school building scheduled for completion next April in Goshogadani, Chuo Ward.
