Kyushu Electric Power on June 17 opened part of the decommissioning work at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant in Saga Prefecture to the media, marking a new phase in the retirement of Units 1 and 2. Reporters were shown the dismantling of a cooling water pump inside a radiation-controlled area of Unit 1. The reactors are being decommissioned due to the cost of safety upgrades and challenges securing land for anti-terrorism facilities. The process is divided into four stages, with the second phase beginning in April 2026. Once this stage is completed, work will pause while radioactive materials decay before the reactors themselves are dismantled. The entire decommissioning project is scheduled for completion in fiscal 2054. Kyushu Electric said it will continue prioritizing radiation safety and public disclosure. Source: KBC News / FBS News
