Genkai Town Council Approves Petition for Nuclear Waste Literature Survey

On April 25, the Genkai Town Council in Saga Prefecture passed a petition urging the town to apply for the first stage of a nuclear waste disposal site selection process, known as the “literature survey.” If officially adopted, this would be the first instance of a council from a municipality with nuclear facilities agreeing to such a survey. The literature survey is part of a three-stage process mandated by law to identify suitable sites for the permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste deep underground. The decision, passed with a majority, aims to initiate national discussions without immediate commitment to hosting a disposal site. Concerns about potential reputational damage were also raised. The petition, endorsed by six votes to three, is expected to pass in the full council meeting on April 26, setting a precedent for other nuclear host municipalities. Source: NHK
