An international conference of professional tourist guides opened in Fukuoka City on February 9, marking the first time the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations has held its general meeting in Japan. Around 600 guides from 47 countries and regions are attending the five-day event, with about 520 traveling from overseas, mainly Europe and Australia. The conference focuses on global guiding standards, sustainable tourism, and responses to overtourism, alongside workshops introducing Japanese culture. Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima welcomed participants in English at the opening ceremony. Conference-linked tours will take attendees to destinations across Kyushu and western Japan, including Munakata Taisha Shrine and Kokura Castle, as part of efforts to promote the region internationally.
