Home improvement retailer Good Day, which operates 67 stores across northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi, has launched a household used cooking oil collection program in partnership with local governments to promote resource recycling and decarbonization. Collection boxes have already been installed at eight stores in Fukuoka City and seven stores in Kitakyushu, with additional installations planned from August at stores in nearby municipalities, including Nakama, Iizuka, Shonai, Nogata, and Yukuhashi. Customers can bring used cooking oil in plastic bottles to participating stores free of charge while shopping, making recycling part of their everyday routine. The collected oil will be processed into biodiesel fuel (BDF), while recycled cooking oil can also serve as feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and industrial materials. In Fukuoka City, the recycled biodiesel will be used to fuel selected ground service vehicles at Fukuoka Airport operated by Japan Airlines (JAL). Good Day said the initiative is designed to encourage a shift from simply reducing waste to embracing a circular economy by making resource recycling more accessible to local residents.
