Graduation Mask Policy Divides Students and Teachers

The Japanese government recently announced a policy allowing students to attend graduation ceremonies without wearing masks. In response, Dazaifu Nishi Elementary School in Dazaifu City changed its policy from allowing students to remove masks during entry and exit and during the presentation of certificates, to removing masks throughout the ceremony except during the singing of the school song. Some students have mixed feelings about removing their masks, with some wanting to take them off, others resistant, and others wanting to decide based on what others are doing. The school will allow students to decide for themselves and will make a final decision taking into account notices from the education board and the opinions of teachers, guardians, and guests.
