Hashima Island (also known as “Gunkanjima” or “Battleship Island”) in Nagasaki, the abandoned island once home to a bustling coal mining town, will become a designated National Historic Site in June. This new status allows the site to apply for more government grants, and is crucial in the bid for the island to be considered for World Heritage listing. UNESCO will visit the site this summer.
