Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival Eyes Pre-Pandemic Scale

The organizing committee of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, a traditional summer event with a history of nearly 800 years, held a general meeting and called for cooperation from stakeholders to hold the festival on a scale similar to that before the pandemic. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival is known for its dynamic “Kakiyama” and decorative “Kazariyama” floats and was held last year with restrictions on participants due to COVID-19 measures. On April 20, the general meeting of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Promotion Association, the main organizing body, took place at Kushida Shrine in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Following the meeting, it was reported that a special “Kakiyama” float will be displayed to pray for world peace in conjunction with the World Aquatics Championships to be held in Fukuoka City in July.
