Hakata Port Sublease Scandal Grows

In Fukuoka City, it has been discovered that two additional facilities at Hakata Port were being subleased by “Hakko Unyu,” a business operator, in violation of local ordinances. The city had previously issued improvement recommendations to three of Hakko Unyu’s facilities last December. After further investigation into the remaining 10 facilities, the city issued additional improvement recommendations in August for the two newly identified locations. As of September, the city has concluded its series of investigations and is considering imposing fines on the operator. The city has decided to allow continued usage of some facilities, shortening the usual annual renewal to a one-month term, citing “a certain level of improvement.” The city also stated it would continue to monitor the situation.
