Hakozaki Campus Site Plans Still Up in the Air

With the full relocation of Kyushu University’s Hakozaki Campus (Higashi Ward) facilities to Ito Campus (Nishi Ward) scheduled for completion in 2018, discussions are underway on how to make use of the 43 ha Hakozaki site. Discussions are being held among university officials, local residents and businesses and even in the City Assembly. Local business owners who formerly catered to the students are worried about the future. “I hope they build a theme park or something else that attracts lots of people,“ said a man who works as a building superintendent. Other ideas that have been floated for the site include a venture company incubator, condos, a shopping mall or buildings to house branch offices of national government agencies. Kyushu University surveyed the public about what they would like to see happen on the Hakozaki site, but it has yet to issue a detailed plan. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 9/17
