Hakozaki redevelopment plan unveiled for former Kyushu University campus

A group led by Sumitomo Corporation unveiled the overall plan for HAKOZAKI BLOCK on Oct. 22. The redevelopment covers 28.5 hectares of the former Kyushu University Hakozaki campus in Fukuoka’s Higashi Ward. Housing and dormitories are planned for about 5,400 residents, alongside facilities including a supermarket and an electronics retailer. Proposed technology includes facial recognition for payments and door access, plus AI-assisted security cameras. The district is scheduled to open in stages from fiscal 2028 through fiscal 2036.
