Haruaki Deguchi is the Next President Of A.P.U.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture) announced on Nov. 24 that Mr. Haruaki Deguchi (69), founder of Lifenet Life Insurance, will be their next president. Mr. Deguchi was selected out of approximately 100 names put forward for recommendation, and his term of office will last three years from January. The appointment represents the first time that APU, which opened in 2000, has looked outside the university to chose a new president. A Mie Prefecture-native and a graduate of Kyoto University, Mr. Deguchi retired from Nippon Life (Nissay/Nihon Seimei) after holding various positions inside the company, including head of international operations. He went on to set up Lifenet in the late 2000s, which was the first time that an independent life insurance company had been established in Japan for 74 years. He served as the president and chairman of the company before retiring in June this year. In accepting the position Mr. Deguchi stated that the he sees the university representing the future of the country and expressed his desire to raise the status of APU around the world.
