The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks held a press conference at Yahoo Dome to welcome their new infielder, Bryan LaHair. The 30-year old said he aims to bat .300, hit 30 home runs and lash 100 hits in his first season in Japan. “My goals may be too high, but I want give my all and lead the team to victory,” said LaHair. Last year, LaHair hit 16 home runs and batted .259 for the Chicago Cubs. “Not only is he a power hitter, he is a solid player who can drive to ball to any part of the field,” declared Coach Akiyama. LaHair will bat cleanup. The Hawks also signed Vicente Padilla, a career 108-game winner who pitched for the Boston Red Sox last season, to a one-year $3.25 million (209 million) contract including performance bonuses. The Nicaraguan journeyman is scheduled to arrive in Japan soon and join the second session of spring training on Feb. 5.
