Hawks Add Foreign Power

The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks held a press conference at Yahoo Dome to welcome their new infielder, Bryan LaHair. The 30-year old said he aims to bat .300, hit 30 home runs and lash 100 hits in his first season in Japan. “My goals may be too high, but I want give my all and lead the team to victory,” said LaHair. Last year, LaHair hit 16 home runs and batted .259 for the Chicago Cubs. “Not only is he a power hitter, he is a solid player who can drive to ball to any part of the field,” declared Coach Akiyama. LaHair will bat cleanup. The Hawks also signed Vicente Padilla, a career 108-game winner who pitched for the Boston Red Sox last season, to a one-year $3.25 million (209 million) contract including performance bonuses. The Nicaraguan journeyman is scheduled to arrive in Japan soon and join the second session of spring training on Feb. 5. The head of team development said he hopes Padilla can be a starter but added that “his performance will determine his role on the team.” He will wear number 42.
