Heavy Rain Forecasts For Kyushu – Mobile Phone Service Disrupted

Record-breaking volumes of rain continue in Kyushu as more wet air flows into the area between Jul. 10 ~ 12. While precise predictions of torrential rain are difficult, authorities warn that any region can expect a sudden disastrous rainfall. Residents are advised to review “Hazard Maps” to brace for such events. In Fukuoka Prefecture, landslide warnings are in effect for cities of Omuta, Yame, and Miyama. Also, risks of floods, lightning hits, and tornados are high in other areas, as well. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan reported that the estimated-maximum water level of flooding in Omuta City reached five meters as of the morning of July 7. Around Kyushu, a total of 1080 mm rainfall was recorded in Kaya City (Kagoshima) between Jul. 3 ~ Jul. 9 14:00, 917 mm in Hita (Oita) and 880 mm in Asagiri (Kumamoto.) Weak mobile-phone connections are reported in some regions. While most of those cases were found in Kumamoto and Oita, users in Yame City reported poor connections to AU mobile-phone lines. Those who need internet access can visit wi-fi connected facilities such as train stations, and set network name as “00000JAPAN” (*only non-encrypted lines are available.) Recently, Fukuoka City, Kitakyushu City, and other local governments announced public housing provision for free to those whose homes became uninhabitable.
