Historic Fukuoka Castle Tower to Be Restored

One of the towers of the Fukuoka Castle ruins, the “Shiomi Yagura,” is set to be restored by the spring of the year after next. Fukuoka Castle, built by the first lord of the Fukuoka domain, Nagamasa Kuroda, during the Edo period, is designated as a national historic site. However, many of its towers and gates have not survived. The Fukuoka City government has decided to restore the “Shiomi Yagura” by the spring of the year after next. This wooden two-story structure, approximately 10 meters high, was located at the northwest end of the castle’s third enclosure and was named for its position overlooking the sea. Having been relocated to the Kuroda family’s temple, Soufukuji in Hakata-ku during the Meiji period, discussions about its restoration at the castle ruins have been ongoing for about 30 years. The restoration will utilize about 40% of the original materials, such as the beams and pillars, and will incorporate historical construction methods, like mixing straw with soil to create the walls. The project is estimated to cost around 400 million yen, with a portion of over 139 million yen raised through hometown tax donations being allocated for this purpose. Source: NHK
