Hojoya Festival Cancelled for 2020

The traditional fall festival of Fukuoka, Hojoya, announced its cancellation for 2020. The September festival is considered one of ‘Hakata’s three grand festivals,’ and attracts more than a million visitors to Hakozaki Shrine annually. Reflecting on the lingering risks of the novel coronavirus, the shrine decided to cancel the crowd-gathering event for the first time since World War II. The Shinto rituals related to Hojoya will be conducted amongst the shrine priests and other limited supporters. Sources: Mainichi / TNC
