An illegal opium poppy was found among about one million blooming nemophila flowers at Uminonakamichi Seaside Park in Fukuoka City, the second straight year such a plant has been discovered there. The flower was identified as the Atami poppy, which contains narcotic components and is prohibited under Japan’s Opium Control Law. After a visitor reported the plant, park officials removed it and disposed of it by incineration. Authorities believe the seeds may have been unintentionally introduced through soil, fertilizer, or other materials. Experts said the species spreads easily, with seeds carried by wind or attached to shoes and tires. Officials are urging the public to contact health centers or police if similar plants are found.
