Imported Cars Popular in Kyushu

Sales of imported vehicles are on the rise in Japan. Domestic makers continue to struggle after the expiry of the eco-car subsidies, but foreign car makers have seen the number of units sold increased by 12.9% year-on-year for the period from January to July 2013. In Kyushu, the 17.3% increase exceeded the national average. According to Volvo Cars Fukuoka-Minami, the Volvo Café it built in the corner of its showroom has been popular ever since opening in April. Part of the overall sales strategy, it offers free coffee and information on Swedish culture. As of July 31, Volvo has already received orders for 237 of its latest model, the V40, alone and is fast approaching its total sales mark of 260 for the same period last year. The Japan subsidiary of Germany’s Volkswagen also reports brisk sales buoyed by commercials featuring popular Japanese singers and “talents”. Likewise, a Sasebo-based Mercedes-Benz dealer notes an increase in customers coming to his showroom after putting an A Class on display at Hotel Okura JR Huis Ten Bosch. The dealership is selling five to eight A Classes every month, which is helping boost overall sales. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, Aug. 27
