Yuichiro Ito won his third term as governor of Kagoshima Prefecture, winning slightly more than 66% of the vote to defeat challenger Yoshitaka Mukohara. Mukohara tried to turn the election into a single issue contest by opposing the restart of the Kyushu Electric Power nuclear reactors at their Sendai plant. In contrast, Gov. Itoh favored the resumption of nuclear power generation in the prefecture.
