An earthquake centered in the Fukuoka region produced seismic intensity 4 shaking in Itoshima at about 6:37 a.m. on August 17. The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated the quake at a depth of 10 km and magnitude 4.4. Seismic intensity 3 was recorded in Fukuoka’s Nishi Ward and Karatsu, while authorities reported no injuries or building damage. The Fukuoka Regional Headquarters of the JMA said it was the first locally centered earthquake to produce intensity 4 or stronger in the prefecture since May 2005 and urged residents to remain prepared.
