Japan’s First Osmotic Power Plant Breaks Ground in Fukuoka

Fukuoka City hosts the groundbreaking ceremony for Japan’s first practical-level osmotic power generation plant, utilizing the salinity gradient between seawater and freshwater. The Fukuoka Area Waterworks Agency is spearheading the construction in Higashi Ward, aiming for operation by March next year. This innovative power generation method, promising consistent energy production regardless of weather conditions, hopes to achieve practical efficiency using brine from desalination processes. With a construction budget of approximately 700 million yen, the facility plans to generate 880,000 kWh annually, enough for around 300 households, marking a pioneering step in domestic renewable energy efforts.
