Japan’s First Osmotic Power Plant Launches In Fukuoka

Fukuoka City has launched Japan’s first commercially viable osmotic power plant, utilizing salinity differences between seawater and freshwater to generate electricity. Located in Higashi Ward, the ¥700 million facility uses byproducts from the city’s desalination plant to enhance efficiency. The plant is expected to produce 880,000 kWh annually—enough to power about 290 households—making it the second such commercial project worldwide after Denmark. Officials say the system offers stable, 24-hour power generation, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. Source: NHK
