Japan’s Oldest Amur Tiger Dies

Kai, the oldest Amur tiger in captivity in Japan, died at Fukuoka City Zoo on June 4 at the age of 20. The male tiger was born at a zoo in Shizuoka in 2006 and moved to Fukuoka the following year, becoming a popular attraction known for his calm nature. According to the zoo, Kai’s appetite declined sharply from February and his physical condition weakened, prompting staff to suspend public display and provide care behind the scenes from March. Although his condition temporarily improved and limited public viewing resumed in late May, keepers found him unresponsive in his enclosure on June 4. A memorial flower stand will be placed outside the tiger enclosure from June 5 to 18. Source: NHK News / Fukuoka City Zoo
