JR Kyushu has terminated three executives from its subsidiary, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry, following the concealment of water leakage in the “Queen Beetle” high-speed ferry operating between Fukuoka and Busan. The subsidiary was found to have continued operations for over three months despite knowing about water intrusion in the ship’s bow. The incident led to administrative penalties from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in September.
In response, JR Kyushu dismissed the former president (56), safety management officer (57), and operations manager (61) of the subsidiary, stripping them of their director roles and imposing disciplinary termination. Additionally, JR Kyushu President Yoji Furumiya voluntarily returned 30% of his executive salary for two months, and the managing director overseeing the subsidiary returned 10%. Specific disciplinary measures for other employees were not disclosed. JR Kyushu reaffirmed its commitment to preventing recurrence and restoring trust while aiming to resume the ferry’s operations.
