JR Kyushu has begun testing partially automated train operations between Akama and Kurume stations on the Kagoshima Main Line, aiming to address challenges in railway usage and securing train drivers. The automated driving support system covers acceleration, deceleration, and stopping at red signals. JR Kyushu is also conducting demonstration tests on the Kashii Line using an autonomous driving system, allowing staff without a driver’s license to operate trains. With the difficulty of maintaining routes due to population decline, the company aims for unmanned operations in the future. Source: JR Kyushu / NHK
