JR Kyushu is quickly upgrading its ticket machines to accommodate new banknotes set to be issued on July 3, the first update in 20 years. About half of the 600 machines have been updated so far. In stations with old machines, staff are placing stickers to inform passengers. The switch is costly, and complete updates are expected by December 2025. Some stations, like Shii Koen in Kitakyushu, are already using new machines due to high cash usage among passengers. QR codes are being used for fare adjustments where machines aren’t yet updated.
