JR Kyushu to Convert Consumption Tax Increase to Fare Hike

JR Kyushu President Koji Karaike said that the railroad would convert any consumption tax increase into a fare increase in conjunction with a tax rise in stages. When the consumption tax was boosted from 3% to 5% in 1997, JR Kyushu raised all fares over 260 yen by 2%. As with the previous increase, however, Karaike does not think it will have an impact on the number of riders.
