JR Kyushu plans to extend its driverless train system—already fully implemented on the Kashii Line—to sections of the Kagoshima and Nippo main lines by late 2027. The system places a non-licensed crew member at the front for safety checks and emergency stops while trains operate automatically. Beginning in December, JR Kyushu will introduce driver-on-board automatic operation between Mojikō and Kokura and between Kokura and Usa, ahead of a shift to full automation. The company will invest about ¥3 billion, aiming to improve safety and address staff shortages. Officials said they plan to build operational experience to ensure passenger confidence.
