Akihiro Yamaguchi, a third-year high school student in Kagoshima Prefecture, set a new world’s record for the men’s 200-meter breaststroke at the National Games in Gifu. His time of 2:07.01 broke the previous mark of 2:07.28 set during the London Olympics. Yamaguchi failed to qualify for the Olympics this year when he finished third in two races at the national championships.
