Kagoshima Plans Free Shinkansen for Foreign Tourists

Kagoshima Prefecture has proposed covering the cost of a one-way Kyushu Shinkansen ticket between Hakata Station and Kagoshima-Chuo Station for foreign tourists as part of an effort to boost inbound travel. The subsidy would apply to visitors who stay at least one night at accommodations within the prefecture. About ¥278 million was included in the prefecture’s budget proposal for the next fiscal year. The plan has prompted more than 170 public comments, most of them critical, with concerns about fairness and preferential treatment. Governor Koichi Shiota said the trial program aims to attract 20,000 visitors and generate an estimated ¥1.7 billion in local spending, noting that overseas tourists spend significantly more per trip than domestic travelers.
