The increasing number of accidents between bicyclists and pedestrians has led to Kanso, a Fukuoka City-based sign design company, to produce sidewalk signs to prevent those accidents. One is a sign placed on the sidewalk to indicate the sections where bicycles pass, and another shows the amount of time remaining until one reaches a bicycle stand. The company hopes they are adopted for use by local governments in busy shopping districts. The first design won a Fukuoka Industry design award in 2009, and is being used on a trial basis in some districts of the city.
