Kitakyushu City reported its first net population inflow in six decades, with 492 more people moving into the city than leaving in 2024. This milestone, termed “social growth,” marks a significant reversal after continuous net outflows since 1964.
Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi expressed excitement, calling it a “turning point for Kitakyushu’s resurgence.”
Unlike “natural growth,” which reflects changes due to births and deaths, “social growth” measures the net difference between in-migration and out-migration. While Kitakyushu’s overall population continues to decline, this growth indicates an increase in working-age residents, particularly young adults and families.
The inflow has been attributed to several factors, including improved retention of younger residents, a surge in IT-related businesses, and the city’s top national ranking for startup emergence. Kitakyushu also benefits from strong welfare services, especially for families and people with disabilities, according to local residents.
