The expansion of Kitakyushu Airport’s runway to 3,000 meters has been slated for completion by August 31, 2027. The Mayor of Kitakyushu City, Kazuhisa Takeuchi, made the announcement on June 30, clarifying the start date as formally declared by the government. Previously, the completion had been projected within the fiscal year of 2027. The extension, adding 500 meters to the current length, will allow large aircraft to operate at full cargo capacity for flights to Europe and the Americas. Mayor Takeuchi expressed that the timeline is quicker than expected, and emphasized the role of Kitakyushu as a key gateway for Northern Kyushu’s logistics operations.Source: Nikkei / Kitakyushu Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi official Twitter
