More than one million passengers used the Kitakyushu Airport in 2008, the third straight year that passenger total was reached, despite an overall 4.5% decline from the previous year. This decline, which became pronounced after the summer, was attributed to the downturn in the economy. Despite the lower figures, however, the airport still reached its target of more than one million users per year.
