The Kitakyushu City Board of Education has decided to introduce a two-semester system for municipal elementary, junior high, and special needs schools for the current academic year. The measures have been taken in response to the prolonged time that local schools have been closed due to the spread of the new coronavirus. The first semester will run from April 1 to October 16 and the second from October 17. The Municipal Board of Education has expressed concern that it will be difficult to evaluate students’ progress during the remainder of the first semester, irrespective of when schools reopen. Plans are in place to reduce the number of tests and report cards that need to be filled in by teachers as a means of reducing the burden on staff. The changes have also had an impact on this year’s summer and winter vacations, which have been shortened to 11 and 10 days, respectively. Source: Asahi
