Kitakyushu Debuts Japan’s First Dedicated Cargo Air Service

On April 11th, Yamato Holdings marked a significant milestone with the inaugural flight of Japan’s first dedicated cargo aircraft, which arrived at Kitakyushu Airport in the evening. The launch was commemorated with a ceremony attended by key figures including Fukuoka Governor Hattori and Kitakyushu Mayor Takeuchi.

The introduction of this cargo-only aircraft is part of a strategic initiative to address pressing logistics challenges, such as the 2024 labor regulations limiting truck drivers’ hours and a nationwide shortage of drivers. Operated in collaboration with the JAL Group, the service includes nine daily flights connecting Kitakyushu Airport with Narita and Naha Airports. Plans are underway to expand services to include New Chitose and Haneda Airports by the summer. This new service, using the Airbus A321-200 P2F with a maximum load capacity of 28 tons, is equivalent to five to six 10-ton trucks. Initially, the operation will focus on routes to Narita and Naha, with four daily flights, expanding to six daily flights including a Haneda route by August.

Yamato Holdings has embarked on this venture by sub-leasing aircraft from Spring Japan, a low-cost carrier within the JAL Group, aiming to utilize the aircraft for long-distance transportation of semiconductor equipment parts and agricultural and marine products from Kyushu. The company is targeting to fill any remaining capacity with its courier service, aiming to develop a competitive pricing model that attracts corporate clients and diversifies its cargo beyond traditional courier services.
