The Kitakyushu Marathon organizing committee announced that the 2027 event will introduce a new 1.5-kilometer Fun Run open to wheelchair users, expanding participation opportunities. The race will be held on February 21 alongside the full marathon and other existing events. Both manual and powered everyday wheelchairs will be accepted, while racing wheelchairs will be excluded. Organizers expect several dozen wheelchair participants and said the change is intended to make the event more inclusive. The committee also approved a JPY1,000 increase in entry fees for all events except the Fun Run because of rising labor and operating costs, raising the full marathon fee to JPY15,500.
