Kitakyushu Offshore Wind Farm Starts Operations

Japan’s largest offshore wind farm began commercial operations on March 2 off the coast of Hibikinada in Kitakyushu. Operated by Hibiki Wind Energy and backed by J-Power and Kyuden Mirai Energy, the project comprises 25 fixed-bottom turbines, each generating 9,600 kilowatts, for a total capacity of 220,000 kilowatts. Annual output is estimated at 500 million kilowatt-hours, enough to supply approximately 170,000 households—about 40% of Kitakyushu’s homes. Construction began three years ago and installation was completed in August 2025. Electricity will be distributed to general consumers through a Kyushu Electric Power subsidiary. The launch comes as Japan seeks to expand offshore wind power despite rising material and construction costs affecting projects elsewhere. Source: NHK News / FNN / Nikkei
