Kitakyushu Subsidizes Shinkansen Commuting to Attract Residents

Kitakyushu City has launched a public–private initiative to encourage migration by subsidizing Shinkansen commuting between Kokura and Hakata stations. The program, announced by Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi and JR West officials, provides commuters with 10,000 yen per month in WESTER points when using a Shinkansen commuter pass between the two stations, which are about 15 minutes apart by train. The subsidy is available to young people and families with children who purchase homes in Kitakyushu through the city’s relocation support program and commute via Shinkansen. Participants can receive the monthly points for up to three years. Organized by the newly established Kitakyushu Migration Promotion Council, the initiative promotes a lifestyle combining home ownership in Kitakyushu with work in the Fukuoka metropolitan area.
