Kitakyushu City has announced plans to revamp the observation deck on the top of Mt. Sarakura, a popular destination for both climbing and nightscape viewing. The City aims to complete the new facility within five years in an effort to tap into the burgeoning nightscape tourism market. Mt. Sarakura was selected by a nightscape aficionados group in 2003 as one of Japan’s new top three locations for nighttime scenery. Every year, about 400,000 people visit the spot, but some visitors have complained that parking is limited and there are no attractions other than the deck. The City plans to refurbish the existing observation deck and a playground nearby. The plan is the culmination of research and discussions conducted by a review committee the City established in 2014. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 5/18
