Kitakyushu City and Toyama Prefecture, both actively promoting their regional sushi offerings, will go head-to-head in a culinary competition titled “Osaka Summer Campaign” on August 26. The event will be held in Osaka, chosen as a neutral and high-profile location situated between the two regions and currently energized by preparations for the upcoming Expo.
At the event, participants—who must register in advance—will sample sushi from both areas and vote to determine the winner. The contest aims to boost national visibility for each region’s seafood and culinary appeal. Toyama is known for items like yellowtail (buri) and firefly squid, while Kitakyushu highlights local ingredients from the Kanmon Strait.
This competition follows a June agreement between the two governments to develop a “sushi golden route,” a tourism initiative connecting their culinary and cultural attractions. On the same day as the event, Kitakyushu City, Toyama Prefecture, and JR West will sign a three-way cooperation agreement to promote regional exchange and travel. Source: Kitakyushu City
